Why a new year makes a difference

The Earth completes a full orbit around the Sun. It is an endless cycle that nobody knows how long it has been around. It undoubtedly happened before its annotation in any form of calendars depicted by humanity.

Why does a pin in a circle make a difference? When we reach that point, we state New Year’s Resolutions, leave everything in the past year behind and start making new plans.

Garbage Collection

When we want to dispose of physical stuff that we no longer need, we use containers with a limited capacity. At a certain point, we reach the capacity, and we need to empty the container.

What about emotional stuff? Everybody makes mistakes. Even if we don’t admit it, they haunt us for varying periods. How do you know when you’ve reached the capacity of your emotional garbage container? It feels good to enclose a fixed period, as in a year, to reflect on everything that had happened, retain the takeaways and let go of everything else.

Measurement

We need a measurement to perceive how we are doing. How much time did a task take us, how much distance did we run this morning, how much water did we drink during the day to keep ourselves hydrated, etc?
